The governors attended an in-house child protection training session delivered by Jon, prior to the FGB. We then started the meeting. Andrew welcomed Beccy, Judith, Catherine, Sam and Nicola as new co-opted and associate governors, and they were unanimously accepted into the FGB.
Jon summarised details of Prevent Duty and how this role falls under the governors’ role of child protection. He will provide a more detailed presentation at the next Curriculum and Standards committee meeting. Jon also discussed proposals on governor accountability, and how we could meet with school subject leaders, and have presentations from them, to improve governor accountability for the school curriculum. We agreed on having one on one link governor roles with the subject leaders, along with occasional group sessions throughout the year.
Sam then presented her headteacher’s report. She explained how it was produced in line with Ofsted target areas. Sam covered Learning Ladders collection data, which is taking place and will provide data to track pupil rates of progress. We discussed what the evidence for expected progress will be and how expected progress will be measured on a year on year basis.
Sam talked about school attendance, the number of pupils on roll, and the school waiting lists per year. We discussed the current Year 2, which reflects a high birth year, and the potential option of the school taking on additional numbers if required in September 2016. HCC are reviewing the situation in January.
Sam covered the school performance management and Ofsted training. A Learning Ladders information evening had been held for new parents. She talked about Zara and Diana’s recent visit to Cairo to offer training and support around Learning Ladders to an Egyptian school, which had been a very successful visit and been well received. Hiltingbury Junior school pupils had responded well to the visit and it had featured in their school work afterwards.
We discussed the support work for local schools that Jon and Sam are performing at present. It was a positive experience for them, for the schools in question, and also for Hiltingbury, strengthening leadership skills and communications for all concerned. We discussed the impact on Hiltingbury and it was noted that the support work would not be allowed to have a detrimental effect on our school. The governors gave Jon and Sam their full support in these endeavours.
We talked about teaching, learning and assessment, including the success of learning walks around the classrooms during lessons. Sam summarised Pupil Premium funding and support for the school.
Jon reported on the outcomes from the school safeguarding audit, and we talked about various policies in this area.
Andy agreed to chair the next Standards and Curriculum meeting on behalf of Debbie. Debra fed back on the last Resources Committee meeting, and reviewed the revised school budget figures, which the governors ratified.
Margaret confirmed that the next whole governing body training session was scheduled for February 2016, to cover the roles of Support and Challenge as an FGB.
Sam finished the meeting by noting how pleased she was that the governing body was now at a full complement of members with a wide range of experience and backgrounds.
