After the check on safeguarding and pecuniary interests from the governors and a review of the previous FGB minutes, Sam went through her head teacher’s report for the last half term. We discussed the SATS results and the comparisons with figures from the previous year. We reviewed the SATS results compared with the national average. Learning Ladders continues to be a high focus and we discussed how to summarise the school’s progress from the data on the rungs. Interest in the Learning Ladders has been received from overseas.
Sam said that the Raise Online data would be published in November and this would provide a clearer view of the school’s progress. The school is proceeding with its Performance Management reviews; we talked about coaching for the staff and subject leadership. Sam said that Sharon Pay has been accepted on to the National Centre of Excellence for Mathematics. Sam said the manager of the local ASDA supermarket had come into school to speak with the children after they had written to him about Fair Trade, and this had gone very well.
Jon is taking on the responsibility of Pupil Premium teacher and will be spending one on one time with the pupils during the week. Sam talked about Sports funding, and how some pupils had taken part in team sports on a canoeing trip recently, which had been a very positive experience for them and it was hoped would encourage them to maintain participation in sports.
We discussed the new Oftsed Common Inspection Framework, which comes into effect from September. Sam summarised the new arrangements – there is focus on leadership, performance management and governance, with assessment including focus on the pupil’s knowledge and feedback from pupils too. Sam explained these new headings would be applied across the school’s strategic plan from September.
With Matthew’s resignation from chair of the governing body at the end of the summer term, the governors agreed to discuss vacancy management at the next FGB in September.
We looked at the actions from the Self Evaluation Form to see what had been completed and what still needed to be addressed. This included circulating the governors’ skills audit, providing questionnaires to parents and staff, and pupil surveys and feedback from some of the pupil forum groups. The INSET days for the 2015/2016 school year were discussed and agreed.
Margaret was circulating a list of courses for the Whole Governing Body Training programme and the governors would feed back to her on their ideas for the next WGBT session. We also reviewed and discussed a number of school policies – on child protection, new recruitment, and standard equality.
Andrew Buckley was elected as chair or governors for the next academic year, and Andy Wright as vice-chair. We thanked Rod for his work and support over many years as the outgoing vice-chair.
Matthew thanked the governing body for their support during his governorship and chair, and wished the governing body and the school every success for the future. Sam led the governors in thanking Matthew for his leadership and support, and we all wished him well for the future.
