The FGB discussed governor induction and a governor induction pack to assist new governors with the role. We confirmed that pecuniary interests and attendance details were published on the school website.
Sam's written headteacher's report was circulated for discussion. Points discussed included how quality of teaching is assessed, whole staff training on the recent INSET day, the cohort of pupils joining the school in September, and the reflection of more complex needs for special needs pupils within the Raise online data. Sam outlined the SATS results and informed us they were above the national average; in fact they were felt exceptional in relation to the new curriculum and assessment processes. The governors asked that thanks be passed on to the school staff for their hard work.
We reviewed the job descriptions for the new staffing structure (executive headteacher, head of school and assistant headteacher) and ratified them unanimously.
The new terms of reference document was discussed and the manual of personnel practice was adopted.
The governing body skills audit was ongoing and would be carried forwards to the next FGB for further discussion.
The renewal of the positions of chair and vice-chair of the FGB was discussed; the actual reappointments of these positions was to take place at the next FGB in the autumn term.
In order to avoid difficulties with everyone's attendance of governor meetings in the evenings, it was proposed and agreed to alternate some future meetings between morning and early evening slots. This was to begin in the autumn term.
We discussed a forthcoming session "“Using Your School’s Data to Improve Pupil Outcomes”, along with using The Key online resources for the governor material and contents. We also talked about training courses attended since the last FGB, including a local conference on topics such as the government white paper, academisation, and aspirational governance. There was also feedback on "Understanding Special Educational Needs" and "Holding leaders to account." There was agreement in the importance of governor self-evaluation early in 2017, along with sharing best practice with other schools.
The FGB concluded with a review of the school emergency plan, along with outstanding policy reviews.
